"Double-runway option for Lindbergh Field is eliminated" Tuesday, October 4, 2005 It's unanimous: Airport panel drops 2nd-runway idea The San Diego (CA) Union Tribune SAN DIEGO - A proposal to build a second, parallel runway as part of an expansion of Lindbergh Field was unanimously dropped Monday by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority board. The proposal, known as "San Diego International Airport Concept 6," generated considerable opposition from Point Loma residents. The plan violated three major criteria used by the airport authority to judge potential airport sites, officials said. The parallel runway plan faced terrain obstructions, would have displaced 18,800 residents and increased noise for 31,700 others, according to an Airport Authority statement. The authority is examining a list of nine prospective sites for a future airport. Even without a second runway, an expanded Lindbergh Field remains on the list. Sites in Campo and the Imperial Valley also are being studied. Five military sites will be given a closer look when the federal government's base closure process is completed later this year. |
